I forgot to post these last week: installation photos of the Two Sisters show in the lobby at NBCCD.
My Luthier on the left, Sarah MacLeod's murderous sister on the right.
Monica Lacey's fair sister on the left, and ReBecca Paterson's prince centre and right.
Concept sketches behind the costume.
You might notice there's a pretty big difference between my initial concept sketches and the final product. As with any creative endeavour, what you imagine and what you produce can be drastically different things. It could be a result of your materials behaving in ways you couldn't foresee, you could run out of money or time...
There are any number of things that could happen, and a huge part of being an artist is letting go of some amount of control, and letting the work come together the way it was meant to. You can force it all you want, but you'll be frustrated and chances are the work will show that discord in a bad way.
I pushed through every technical difficulty I had with the Luthier costume and listened to what the materials were saying. The result: a stellar piece and a deepening of my skills and confidence.
It feels pretty good watching people stop and stare at him!
